Dog Supplies
Some dog toys, equipment and dog supplies should be purchased before you bring your puppy home and some, like dog clothing and dog training supplies, can be bought later at your convenience. These are available at retail pet stores or at discount prices over the internet.
1. In addition to the dog beds, dog crates and collar and leash discussed in the last section on what is “needed before your puppy comes home”, there is specialized equipment available for:
-
Traveling with your dog including special carriers for the auto or plane.
-
Grooming your dog as outlined on our Dog Grooming page.
-
Training your dog as outlined in our free report on "Puppy Training".
-
Showing your dog at dog shows including show leads, crate, chair and special grooming tools.
2. Specific collars, leashes and accessories are also available. These include:
-
Retractable and adjustable dog leashes
-
Fancy and functional dog collars and identity tags.
-
Clothes to keep your small dog warm.
-
Ear wraps and tie-ups to keep your long-eared dog’s ears out of the food.
3. A whole range of specialized dog products and supplies are also available for your dog. These include:
-
Dog grooming products.
-
Dog care products such as flea and mite control.
-
Sprays to discourage chewing and/or ‘bite inhibition training’.
-
Urine and odors removing cleaners so your puppy won’t try and repeat his ‘accident’ in the same location.
Dog Toys
The key to selecting your dog’s toys is to choose those toys that are safe and appropriate for the dog breed and the current size of your dog. Remember to have a wide variety of toys to keep your dog interested and to discard toys that are damaged, showing signs of wear or getting too small for your growing puppy. A ball that was just right for your puppy will soon become too small for a growing dog and could get lodged in his throat. Remember to rotate through different toys to keep your dog interested.
DogToys.com has an excellent system to help you choose toys by dog breed and toys by dog size and of course you can always select your toys by type and by name brand. They also have a wide range of stationery, gifts, toys and sale items and will ship for free in the US on orders over $100.
1. Active toys for exercising your dog include:
-
Hard rubber toys like Nylabone-type or Kong- type products or Frisbees and balls that you can throw and have your dog retrieve.
-
Rope toys that are available in dog bone shapes for chewing and tug-of-war games.
-
Tennis balls and tennis ball material toys that float and are great for use at the lake or ocean side. Watch out for fraying of the tennis balls.
2. Chew Toys and Distraction Toys.
-
If your dog is a very aggressive chewer, he will tear many toys apart which can be dangerous. The durable hard rubber toys are great for this type of dog. Kongs can be filled with treats or peanut butter to distract your dog for hours.
-
A less-aggressive chewer would be suited to canvas, plush or rope-type toys that a more-aggressive chewer might tear apart.
-
A non-aggressive chewer can be allowed any type of toy including latex or vinyl toys and squeaky toys.
3. Comfort Toys
-
These toys include soft stuffed toys that your dog can carry around. These wouldn’t be suitable for an aggressive chewer.
-
Old clothes like a T-shirt or pillowcase that smells like you can be comforting to a dog.
Dog Clothes
An entire array of dog clothes and dog apparel is available at many pet supply stores and at discount prices over the internet. Dog clothing ranges from dog sweaters for cool weather, dog coats and boots for cold weather, to costume wear for formal and fun occasions. Clothes are available for small dog breeds right up to very large dog breeds. See our articles on “Toy and Small Dog Clothes” and “The Dogs of Fashion” for more information on dog clothing. The partial range of dog apparel includes:
-
Dog coats that cover the back and sides, sometimes with a wrap around belt and extra flap to cover the belly and chest.
-
Dog rain coats to keep your pet dry in rainy weather.
-
Dog fleeces, dog boots and dog shoes for cold, icy and snowy weather.
-
Dog sweaters with or without hoods for cool weather.
-
Dog tee shirts and dog shirts for fun wear.
-
Dog costumes such as dog Halloween costumes and other fun occasions.
Needed Before Your Puppy Comes Home
See our free report on "Puppy Training" for information on what to buy before your puppy comes home. Essential equipment and dog supplies will include the following:
1. Dog Crates or Dog Pens
-
You should buy a crate that is big enough for your puppy or dog to stand up, turn around and lie down fully stretched out with his water bowl.
-
To save money, you should buy a crate that is big enough to accommodate the adult dog that the puppy will grow into.
-
If you buy the adult-size crate, then you have to shrink down the interior space with cardboard boxes or a divider panel to the size of the puppy.
-
If you give the puppy too much room, then he will sleep in one half of the crate and use the other half for a bathroom.
-
A plastic coated wire mesh cage with a plastic removable floor tray is easier to keep clean then the bare galvanized metal.
2. Dog Beds and Bedding
-
Traditional wicker baskets are difficult to keep clean and are easy for dogs to chew.
-
Polyurethane type dog beds are much easier to clean and are more durable.
-
There are a huge number of dog beds available in small, medium, large and extra large sizes. You can find fleece beds, cedar beds and heated dog beds.
-
Dog beds for giant breeds like the Great Dane should be extra soft or you may find the dog on your soft furniture or bed.
-
The dog pads and/or bedding should be washable as even fleas don’t survive a session in the washing machine.
3. Dog Water Bowls and Dog Food Dishes
-
There are a wide variety of dishes and bowls available in rubber and stainless steel that are dishwasher safe.
-
Your can buy special deep bowls for long-eared dog breeds to prevent your dog from getting food all over his ears.
-
Weighted dog bowls are also available to prevent tipping.
4. Dog Food and Dog Treats
-
See our report on Dog Food for information on feeding your new puppy.
-
Remember to bring a week’s supply of the breeder’s puppy food home with your puppy to transition him gradually over to the new food.
5. Dog Toys
-
See Section on Dog Toys and remember to select the right toys appropriate for his puppy size.
-
Puppies need a variety of toys and especially toys they can chew.
6. Dog Collars and Leashes
-
See earlier section on Dog Supplies.
-
Your new puppy should have a collar that is appropriate for his size. A dog collar of the correct size should allow you to place two fingers between the dog’s neck and the collar. If it is too loose, the collar could slip over the dog’s head. A leather collar with an identity tag is probably best. The lead can be nylon or leather.
