Description:
The English Toy Spaniel is known as the King Charles Spaniel outside of Canada and the U.S. In Canada and the U.S. the King Charles Spaniel name designates one of four colors – specifically black and tan. Other names for this Toy Spaniel are the ETS or “Charlie”. English Toys (or King Charles Spaniels) are closely related to their larger cousin, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but are actually different dog breeds. The English Toy is a compact, square dog with a short nose and a dove-shaped head. The ETS has a thick, long, soft, and slightly wavy coat. There is abundant feathering on the legs and feet and heavy fringing of the ears, body and chest. These Toy Spaniels come in four color varieties: the Blenheim (red and white); the Prince Charles or tricolour (black, white and tan); the Ruby (red); and the King Charles (black and tan). English Toys
stand about 10 to 11 inches tall at shoulder height and weigh from 8 to 12 pounds. The ETS is a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC) Toy Dog Group.
History:
The English Toy probably originated in China or Japan but it was developed in France and England where it is known as the King Charles Spaniel. The breed was primarily used as a lap dog and companion dog for aristocratic ladies. The English Toy was ranked 124th out of 154 dog breeds in 2004 AKC registrations.
Temperament:
The ETS is one of the most cheerful and undemanding of all the toy dog breeds. The English Toy is amiable, affectionate, playful and very adaptable to apartment living and is a great companion dog for seniors. However this Toy Spaniel can also adapt to family life and gets along well with other family pets and older children. The English Toy is too small to be a small child’s pet as he doesn’t appreciate rough handling. This breed loves attention and pampering and it is difficult to avoid spoiling them. The “Charlie” is somewhat cautious of strangers and some early socialization is useful. The English Toy is intelligent and easily learns the small amount of obedience training he requires. This Toy Spaniel does very well with novice or first-time dog owners.
Exercise:
The “Charlie” gets most of the exercise it needs by playing inside the apartment or house. The English Toy does enjoy a romp in the backyard in good weather. This breed does not enjoy hot and humid weather. “Charlies” love air-conditioned comfort.
Grooming:
The English Toy should be brushed twice per week with extra attention to the heavily fringed areas on the ears, body and chest. The folds on these dogs’ faces should be coated weekly with a special lotion.
Health Considerations:
English Toys will live from 10 to 12 years and are susceptible to respiratory problems. The breed has a few common health problems such as eye problems, heart disease and dislocation of the kneecap. Remember not to take “Charlies” outside in hot and humid weather.
